Feel free to list you're favourite PODcasts in this thread and let people know how to listen to them. Also, tips and tricks on how to create your own most likely won't hurt either.

So i'll start with a new project that 444 and myself have been working on.

Cognition Abuse Therapy

It's about life. Well, those things in life that I've been known to enjoy.

It's a bi-weekly show.

The easiest way to grab our shows is to download iTunes, head on over to the Music Store and search for Cognition under the PODcasts menu. The other way is to check out the website (Cognition Abuse Therapy) and it will always have a link to the newest shows.

How I record:

I load up GarageBand and LineIn.

I use LineIn because I don't have a proper mic for this machine yet so I'm just using the iSight built in mic. LineIn allows me to use any audio input device and record it into any other program that doesn't natively utilize that device...

With GarageBand I add a new track, real instrument, vocals, no effects. Then I bring up the properties of that track and select the 'clear vocals' under the equalizer, this helps to cut down on the background noise of the mic.

After that I simply record the show. A warning though, with GarageBand you can only edit about a half hours worth of material at a time. Now, you can record for more than that, but you won't be able to edit any of the audio after the half hour mark. With that being said, you can always just record another segment of the show with no problem.

When I'm done recording, I save the file. You can by-pass this step and export to iTunes right away, but I like to be safe.

Once exported to iTunes, a new playlist will show up. In that playlist will be the exported audio. From there you can encode those files from AIF format to MP3 or AAC/M4A. Typically, to keep the file sizes small, I like to encode them at 48kbps for low quality and 96kbps for the high quality.

Part 2, creating an RSS feed so that those people who use subscription services will be notified when a new show is available.

iTunes will only accept RSS 2.0, so if you want your stream to be indexed via iTunes, you must have that tag in the file.

Any text in bold are the fields you'll need to replace with your own data.

The title of your show

A description of your show, usually with your name in it

title of that image

a description of that image

The title of your show

a description of that show

It should also be noted that you can have as many of these in the RSS file as you want. Everything inside of the item /item tags can be copied and pasted for future listings.

You want to save this file as showname.rss and then upload that some place where it can be indexed by other services.

Since I wanted to be index by iTunes, I submitted the URL of the RSS feed to through their service.

To do this, you load up iTunes, go to the Music Store, go to Podcasts, go to Publish a Podcast and then paste in the URL. Now, iTunes is a bit fussy, it checks the file to make sure that all of the criteria are met for submission. The RSS version, if the tags are closed off... that sort of thing. From there you select a genre and wheather or not your Podcast should have a Parental Advisiory or not.

Then you wait.

And wait.

Until iTunes refreshes its' database. Then you're listed and life is good.

There are iTunes specific RSS tags that you can use, but I haven't bothered with those yet. Here's a list of those tags.

One of my favourite Podcasts is Tod Maffin's How To Do Stuff

Of course there is also Tod's technology column on the CBC, which is also available via podcast.

I should mention for those who are looking for a decent, free recording application, grab yourself a copy of Audacity. It has versions for the Mac, Windows, and Linux, and has quite a lot of decent features.

A few cautions though. Be sure to read through Tod Gets Legal if you're looking at including commercial music in your podcast. You might want to think again. Currently in Canada there is no easy way to legally license music for podcasting, however there are groups attempting to sort out the legal issues. At the moment, to play commercial music (ie, non-independent music on a record label) on a podcast, it looks like you'll need:

1. A license from SOCAN to podcast the music
2. A license from the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency
3. Permission from the record label or holder of the copywrite

Just to note, SOCAN has asked to set the rate for step 1 at $2400/year. So far there has been no decision made, and a lot of people objecting to this - saying for the casual podcaster who does this as a hobby, this is too much.

To be safe, if you're using music in your podcast, make sure it is independent music. Be sure the band you are playing owns the copywrite on the track you're looking to play. And get permission - in writing - to include that track on a podcast.

Just some thoughts.
